Government of Uttarakhand gives award of Rs 50000 named after Acharya Balkrishna Bhatt Shatri.

“Uttaranchal is the school of Sanskrit and culture. The state has planted the tree of Sanskrit Academy which will grow into a big tree in future,” said Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, President of India. He was speaking as Chief Guest at Uttaranchal Sanskrit Academy?s Vidwat Samman Samaroh held in Haridwar recently.

Dr Kalam said Sanskrit is a language known to the entire world and is the life-line of India. It is due to the Sanskrit language that India is respected by the entire world, Dr Kalam said praising the Uttaranchal government for encouraging Sanskrit in the state. Describing the significance of the Vedas, Dr Kalam said, “Vedas are the oldest classics and the most precious treasures of India. The soul of Bharatiya Sanskriti dwells in the Vedas. The entire world admits the importance of the Vedas.” He said that scientists should be encouraged to do research on the Vedas. He expressed his appreciation at the plan of Vidwat Samman, as it would inspire scholars to take interest in Sanskrit. “People will be attracted to Sanskrit by such "Samman Samaroh. A new kind of awakening for Sanskrit will grow among the scholars,” he added.

On this occasion, Narayan Dutt Tewari, Chief Minister of Uttaranchal and president of the Sanskrit Academy said that Uttaranchal was the land of rishis and saints. He said, “Sanskrit language is the mother of many languages of the world. This language consists of the power, which made India superior to other countries of the world. India was known as the vishwaguru because of Sanskrit. He said the Sanskrit Academy in the state is working for the betterment of Sanskrit. The Sanskrit University has been established for the uplift of Sanskrit. Shri Brahmaswarup Brahmachari, Vice President of Sanskrit Academy said that the President’s presence in the Samman Samaroh of Sanskrit scholars was a matter of pride.

The President honoured nine Sanskrit scholars.
(i)             Dr Satyavart Shastri and Prof. Vashishth Tripathi were given the Antarrashtirya Himadari Uttaranchal Sanskrit Samman of Rs 75,000 each,
(ii)            Acharya Dr Ramnath Vedalankar was presented the Rashtriya Badarish Uttaranchal Samman of Rs. one lakh.
(iii)           Prof. Devi Dutt Sharma and Dr Krishna Kumar were honoured with the Rashtriya Bhagirathi Uttaranchal Sanskrit Samman of Rs 50,000 each.
(iv)          Dr Kalam gave Madan Mohan Malaviya Uttaranchal Sanskrit Samman to Prof. Ved Prakash Shastri (Rs 50,000),
(v)           Uttaranchal Rajya Kavivar Gumani Uttaranchal Sanskrit Samman to Prof. Mansaram Sharma (Rs 50,000),
(vi)          Uttaranchal Rajya Balkrishna Bhatt Sanskrit Samman to Dr Jaidutt Upreti (Rs 50,000) and
(vii)          Uttaranchal Rajya Sadanand Dabral Sanskrit Samman to Dr Mathuradutt Pandey (Rs 50,000).

The President was presented a veena as an honour.
